J-Novel Club publishes manga (Japanese comics) and novels, translating works from Japanese. My role as a graphic designer is split into 2 main types of work: Design and Lettering. The design work generally involves translating Japanese design elements to an near-equivalent in English, such as the logos for book titles, as well as other design elements on the cover such as the book's volume number. Others include things like creating and adjusting new layouts for interior pages, like the Table of Contents, for example, as Japanese text in these novels are often written top-to-bottom, right-to-left, there's a need for these to be shown in a manner that is more logical for Western-reading audiences.

Lettering is putting text onto manga pages, such as dialogue, narration, and sound effects, as well as sometimes making minor modifications to the artwork itself when needed. Text, especially sound effects, are styled accordingly to better immerse the reader in the action and drama unfolding on the pages.

The process of lettering and design encorporates multiple workflows within the Adobe Suite, often having to jump between Photoshop, Illustrator, and inDesign, as well as sometimes including Clip Studio Paint as well. All work goes through multiple iterations and revisions within the team and project manager, until it's just right.
